Protecting Your Vessel from Prop and Hull Strikes

Yacht ownership is a luxurious experience that offers a unique way to explore the beauty of the open water. However, as any seasoned yacht owner will tell you, it’s vital to stay aware of potential hazards while cruising. Over the years, I’ve repaired numerous propellers, drives, rudders, hulls, and trim tabs. Fortunately, many of these incidents can be avoided with these simple safety measures.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is to scan the surrounding waters constantly. Keep an eye out for debris such as logs and kelp fields. These debris fields are often easy to recognize by the presence of birds, who are attracted to them. If you see birds sitting on the water in a distance, they could be perched on a partially submerged log.

Also, it’s important to keep an eye out for buoys or floats that may be connected to crab traps. These can easily foul your propeller and cause damage. Always check your navigation chart for water depth prior to entering an unfamiliar area and take note of any hazards that could be lurking below the surface.

If you do happen to strike an object, it’s essential to inspect your vessel for any damage before continuing on your journey. Repairing propellers, drives, rudders, hulls and trim tabs can cost thousands of dollars. By staying vigilant and taking precautions, you can avoid such hazards and enjoy a safe and worry-free yachting experience.
